Ballyshannon

From its idyllic setting, this town looks out over the estuary and has panoramic views of mountains, lakes and forests.
This town with a population of about 2,500 is at the southern end of County Donegal.
It claims to be the oldest town in Ireland and certainly settlements dating back to at least 2500 BC have been discovered in the area.

Ballyshannon Festivals

Nowadays the town is known worldwide as the birthplace of legendary rock guitarist Rory Gallagher and The Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival takes place here on June Bank Holiday each year.
Ballyshannon Folk Festival which is the longest running Folk and Traditional Festival in the world takes place on the August bank holiday each year.
The Ballyshannon & District Museum has numerous exhibits about the ancient and modern history of the locality.

Assaroe Lake beside the town is a fantastic amenity which is a popular spot for fishing, wind surfing kayaking, hiking and other outdoor activities.
Assaroe Abbey was founded in 1178 It was attacked and looted many times but the monks lived on thereuntil after the Flight of the Earls in 1607. All that remains is the west end of the church and a some of the south wall.
